The Know About Business package, developed by the International Labour Organization, was first promoted in Syria in 2006 when it was adapted and translated into Arabic for secondary and vocational Syrian schools. The programmes success has enabled it to be rolled out to over 14 governates in Syria, covering 1005 of vocational schools in 5 of these areas. With government support, the local ILO office and its partner the Strategy Highlighting and Building Abilities for Business (SHABAB) plan to carry out the package to all of Syria.  In addition to the successes of expansion through secondary schools in 14 governates, SHABAB and the ILO in the last 4 years have expanded to Universities, Faculty and expect to roll out to many Universities in Syria soon.

History of KAB in Syria

2006

Adaptation of the KAB package into Arabic for secondary and vocational schools. The first training workshop for Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters, with a total of 35 participants from selected institutions: public secondary schools (both general and vocational), intermediate secondary institutes and public universities.

2007

KAB was pilot tested in 19 secondary schools and intermediate institutes during the 2006/2007 academic year, reaching around 330 students and trainees from Damascus (city and rural area) and Quneitra. A training workshop was also carried out for 25 university Facilitators , where the package was in English but adapted for University level. KAB was then pilot tested in 4 public universities located in Damascus, Aleppo, Tishreen and Baath, with around 100 participating students.

2008

With Ministry approval KAB was added to the national curriculum as part of the national curriculum for secondary vocational schools, intermediate institutes and universities and in the 2008/2009 school year, KAB-based courses were rolled out to around 135 educational institutions. By 2008 an estimated amount of 385 Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters had been trained whom have reached over 27,580 students.

2009

During 2008 and 2009 school years, a large expansion took place, and a an expansion of Training of Teachers (TOTs) were conducted: 13 ToTs were conducted for the Ministry of Education in order to train 374 teachers and 3 more ToTs were conducted for the Ministry of Higher Education in order to train 75 teachers.

2010 and 2011

Continuing the training from the previous year: 6 ToTs were conducted training  185 teachers, and later 3 ToTs were conducted training  69 more teachers. The programme successfully achieved the last expansion phase to cover 14 governorates all over Syria. . 100% of vocational schools and institutes have been covered in: Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Lattakia and Deir ElZour, while the remaining 9 governorates started to implement the programme in some schools and institutes. The programme has been expanded to universities; we increased number of faculties in 5 universities.
