2012 Activities:

21 January-2 February 2012: Riyadh – Saudi Arabia
KAB Training of Facilitators Workshop

Under the ILO/RIYADAH project on the introduction of entrepreneurship education in vocational training, and after long negotiations with RIYADAH, a KAB Training of Facilitators Workshop for women was conducted by the ILO-RO SME Specialist and a KAB Regional Key Facilitator. The workshop was held from 21 January to 2 February 2012 at the Al-Anoud Novotel in Riyadh and was attended by 21 Saudi women from the TVTC (1 coordinator, 1 assistant coordinator, 4 training supervisors and 15 teachers). Participants, who are all teachers of either Accounting or Business Management under the TVTC, came from 13 regions in the Kingdom namely: Riyadh, Al Ahssa’a, Al Khurj, Najran, Al Jof, Ha’el, Breida, Al Baha, Arar, Jeddah, Al Ta’ef, Khamis Mshet and Tabuk.

13-15 October 2012: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
KAB Follow-Up Workshop

A KAB Follow-up Workshop for men was held at the Riyadh College of Telecommunication and Information from 13 to 15 October 2012. The workshop was attended by 20 participants (17 KAB teachers, the KAB National Coordinator from RIYADAH and 2 KAB supervisors).

From the initial 25 teachers trained at the ToF in November 2011, only 9 teachers implemented the entire KAB programme as an elective in the colleges of Abha, Tabuk, Arar, Najran, Al Baha, Medina, Al Majmaa, Jeddah and Taef (on class in each college with the exception of Al Baha where 2 classes were taught). The main reasons provided for not implementing the programme are mainly related to the difficulty in attracting the required number of students to enrol in the programme and to sustain them until the end of the course.

However, it is important to note that teachers who implemented the programme did so in a very professional and organized manner presenting very detailed and well prepared reports at the refresher workshop. Some teachers taught the course during evening sessions from 19:00 to 23:00 and exerted lots of efforts in the marketing of the course (using SMS and holding awareness meetings) and the selection of the students to ensure their commitment and limit the dropout rate.

A total of 220 students were reached, one opened his vegetables shop while some of them went to RIYADAH requesting loans. The five finalists in each class who successfully completed their business plans were given financial rewards ranging from SR2,000 to SR500.

2011 Activities:

The ILO Know About Business (KAB) programme was initiated in Saudi Arabia under the agreement established between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the National Entrepreneurship Institute “Riyadah” in February 2011.

Three awareness workshops, two targeting men, headed by Dr. Hamad Alogla, Vice Governor for Training, and one targeting women, were conducted at the Jeddah College of Telecom and Electronics. The workshops targeted 69 participants comprising of Deans of Colleges and their deputies, Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the Technical and Vocational Training Boards. Participants were split into two groups over 2 days, 19 and 20 September 2011.

Two Training of Facilitators Workshops are planned to be held simultaneously from 19 November to 1 December 2011 in Riyadh targeting men and women teachers from the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.
