Kazakhstan - Youth Entrenet

In 2000, the Know About Business (KAB) package was translated for the first time into Russian, opening the possibility for Central Asian countries to introduce and implement the programme. Kazakhstan then went on to become a pioneer in the region organizing training for Trainers and Promoters and pilot testing the programme in five vocational training schools during the 2001/2002 school year. A year later, in 2003, the curriculum development authority of Kazakhstan validated the KAB material and a decree was issued introducing entrepreneurship education based on KAB modules in the national curriculum of primary vocational education via the course “Basics of the Market Economy”. More Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters were trained at the time in order to expand the delivery of KAB in primary professional schools and lyceums around the country.

In 2007, KAB was introduced as a component of a regional initiative to combat the Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) in Central Asia, by promoting education and skills training to prevent at risk children / youth from WFCL and to rehabilitate and reintegrate victims of child labour. For that, certain KAB modules were adapted and translated into Kazakh language, and a short training programme named “Tourist business” was developed (both in Russian and Kazakh) based on KAB.

More recently, in 2009, Chevron and Baker Hughes provided funds through USAID to promote the further implementation KAB in vocational education institutions.  In this new phase, the programme is being implemented by the Kazakhstan Small Business Development Project and a new KAB standard course has been developed and adopted by the Ministry of Education & Science (MES) raising the minimum hours from 66 to 80.

Education & Training Institutions: 10 primary vocational schools

Facilitators, Trainers and Promoters Trained: 28

Students/Trainees: 3,000

* Note: all data above refers to the information available as of April, 2009. The figures can actually be slightly larger than presented.
